Kikuletwa (Chemka) Hot Springs

Trip Overview

Inclusions and Exclusions

Maji Moto, known locally as Kikuletwa Hotsprings, is a paradisiac oasis amidst the Tanzanian savannah, offers captivating, Bounty-styled views, crystal-clean water, and dense vegetation around. Chemka Hot Springs is the best place to visit after or before a Kilimanjaro hike or a safari adventure.

Chemka oasis is a unique phenomenon – it is the only place in Tanzania (and most likely in the whole of East Africa), where the groundwater actively interacted with geothermal sources, forming several small lakes with warm, never-stagnating water. Its purity is not inferior to the best Dominican or Maldivian resorts.

Travelers to Tanzania usually base in Arusha or Moshi in between hiking trips and safaris. While recovering from multi-day tours and hiking trips one of the best things to do is a day trip to the Chemka Hot Springs, also known as the Kikuletwa Hot Springs. Just 1.5 hours from Arusha and nearby Moshi Town, this is one of the hidden gems of Tanzania that you need to visit. The water is crystal clear in this jungle oasis where you can relax all day and even enjoy rope swings, tire tubing, and some high jumps out of the trees.

This beautiful mineral spring originates from Kilimanjaro ground waters The Chemka Hot Springs are about 40 kilometers away from Moshi, in the homonymous village called Chemka. They are underground springs with warm water. The water forms a clear and clean pond which is ideal for swimming. The pond is very deep, in some places up to 10 meters, but the water is so clear that you can see the bottom well all the time. The pond is situated under lush trees. On the shore you can camp, enjoy your snacks and let yourself dry after swimming.

Day 1 :
Kikuletwa (Chemka) Hot Springs

We will pick you from Moshi/Arusha in the morning . The ride to the hot springs takes about an hour and leads partly over bumpy slopes. First we go past sugar cane plantations, then we come to the African scrubland. Dried river beds, baobab and acacia trees accompany us on our way.

The hot springs of Kikuletwa, also known as Chemka Hot Springs, are close to the village of Rundugai and are one of the most beautiful places in Tanzania to relax. The small pond is surrounded by palm and fig trees with winding roots. In the morning, Blue Monkeys can often be observed in the trees, whilst the crystal clear, turquoise water invites you to a refreshing bath. Although they are called hot springs, the water in Kikuletwa is not truly ‘hot’ but refreshing, as the water source is fed by Kilimanjaro itself.

Enjoy a wonderful day in just the way you want, in the sun dozing, chatting with the locals at the small bar, or swimming - you determine the course of this day. At noon we will have a picnic lunch, and in the late afternoon we return relaxed to Moshi.
